Photo Archive

Shortly after the founding of the Ethnographic Museum in 1919, Vladimir Tkalčić, the first curator and later director, began recording photos in the inventory books of the so-called Photo Archive, which is being used to the present day. Before the reorganization of the Audiovisual Collections carried out between 2015 and 2020, the Photo Archive included about 11,000 items. In addition to the photos, the holdings also included greeting cards and postcards, which were separated during the reorganization and a new collection was formed. The remaining photos are heterogeneous in terms of motif and theme, and were created in the period from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, and cover the area of southeastern and central Europe. A large part belongs to the photo collection of Salamon Berger, the first director of the Ethnographic Museum, and the authors of the photos that need special mention are Rudolf Mosinger, Radivoje Simonović, Đuro Griesbach and others.
