The Negatives Archive was created immediately after the foundation of the Ethnographic Museum in 1919 as a counterpart to the Photo Archive (photos without negatives). It includes about 25,000 black and white and color negatives. In the oldest part of the collection, there are over 6,000 glass plate negatives of various dimensions, as well as around 5,000 medium and large format negatives, while the rest mostly negatives on 35mm film. The collection is heterogeneous in terms of motifs and themes, and can be divided into original photos from field research, photos of museum objects from the holdings of the Ethnographic Museum, and photo documentation of museum exhibitions and events. Geographically, they are mostly limited to Southeastern Europe, and were made mainly by employees of the Ethnographic Museum, among whom it is necessary to highlight Vladimir Tkalčić, Milovan Gavazzi, Božidar Širola, Marcel Davila, and others.
