The Collection of Basketry consists of various basketry products from all over Croatia, made from a variety of plant materials, straw, hazel, willow wicker, rushes, wild vines, corn husks, or sedge. The shape and material indicate belonging to a particular part of Croatia, although some materials can be found everywhere. In many parts of Croatia, people make simpler baskets for everyday use by themselves, while those that are used for more festive occasions are usually bought from basket weavers at fairs or festivals. In the museum collection, there are straw baskets made using the coiling technique, then objects made of hazel with different round, semicircular, oval, or square bases, such as baskets, large baskets with lids and others. Most of the objects are made of willow wicker. Unpeeled wicker is used for rustic baskets, and peeled wicker for finer ones. The museum has several particularly beautifully crafted baskets that are used for representative purposes, decorated with colorful floral motifs. Baskets for a variety of purposes have also been preserved, such as fruit picking, drying, storing and transporting. Round baskets for picking olives or figs in the region of Dalmatia are also interesting. The rushes are used mostly on the Adriatic coast for making the bottoms of sieves and for weaving small baskets for transporting fish. In Northern Croatia, corn husks are used to make bags called ceker, and rushes are used to make bags, which requires wooden molds, some of which are kept in the Collection, which is being replenished by recent products still available at city markets, fairs and festivals.
